A Day in Sarajevo, 1988
These photos of Sarajevo were taken on an afternoon in 1988, while on holiday in former Jugoslavia. Ten years later, I showed them in an exhibition at Rochester Art Gallery, and called the exhibition Unknowing: Sarajevo 1988. I wanted to convey how my relationship with the photos had been changed by the war that erupted in 1992. I looked at the images of women chatting together - about what? - and men reading newspapers which were unlikely to have warned them of the carnage ahead. And the children playing in the street would now be ten years older, if still alive - their memories sullied by experience and time.
